Delhi HC Suspends Life Sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao Rape Case

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday suspended the life imprisonment of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case, granting him bail pending the outcome of his appeal against conviction.

A bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar directed Sengar to furnish a personal bond of ₹15 lakh with three sureties of similar amount.

Strict conditions accompany the release: Sengar must reside in Delhi, surrender his passport, report to the local police station every Monday, and stay at least 5 kilometres away from the survivor's residence. He is barred from threatening the survivor or her mother.

"Any violation will lead to immediate cancellation of bail," the court warned.

Sengar, convicted in December 2019 for raping a minor girl who approached him for a job, remains in custody until similar relief is granted in a connected case involving the custodial death of the survivor's father, where he faces a 10-year sentence.

The high-profile case dates back to June 2017, when the then-17-year-old was allegedly kidnapped and raped. Public outrage erupted after her father died in custody following an assault allegedly by Sengar's brother.

Subsequent tragedies included a 2019 truck collision killing two aunts and injuring the survivor and her lawyer, with Sengar charged in that matter too.

The Supreme Court transferred related cases to Delhi in 2019 for speedy trial.

Sengar's appeal challenges the trial court's verdict under IPC Section 376 and POCSO Act provisions.

The decision has reignited debates on victim safety and judicial delays in sexual assault cases involving influential figures.
