Tensions escalated in Muzaffarpur after 70-year-old Shankar Paswan was beaten to death on Saturday evening in Patsara Ward-12 of Sakhaura Panchayat, under the Hatha police station area. Union Minister and LJP President Chirag Paswan has accused RJD supporters of carrying out the attack, calling it a sign of the return of 'Jungle Raj' and demanded a thorough investigation.
According to the victim’s family, Shankar was attacked while plucking leaves for his goats. A minor argument with five to seven individuals, allegedly including women from the family of Ramesh Rai, escalated into a violent assault using bamboo sticks and lathis. Shankar died on the spot, and his body was reportedly dumped in a roadside paddy field before the attackers fled.
Shankar’s grandson, Sumit Kumar, claimed the family had received threats from local rival factions after Shankar supported an NDA candidate in the 6 November elections. Villagers gathered outside the deceased’s home, demanding immediate arrests and strict action against the culprits.
Police from Hatha, Pier, and Sakra stations, along with DSP-2 Manoj Kumar, intervened to calm the crowd. The body was sent to SKMCH for post-mortem, and after its return on Sunday, protests erupted near the accused’s residence. The authorities allowed the last rites to proceed after assurances of legal action.
Two people have been arrested so far, and raids are ongoing to trace the remaining accused. A case has been filed against five individuals in connection with the incident.
Chirag Paswan, in a social media post, described the murder as “extremely condemnable and painful” and called for the culprits to face the harshest punishment. The district administration, however, has denied any electoral link to the attack.
Shankar Paswan is survived by his wife, Keshia Devi, and four sons – Uday, Sanjay, Vinod, and Bindeshwar – who have demanded strict action against the attackers.
