With the announcement of assembly election dates, Seemanchal, including Purnea, is now in full election mode. The region, considered politically sensitive, is on high alert. Seven companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed in each of the districts of Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj, and Katihar.
The district administration has been monitoring antisocial elements for months. People with criminal records are being targeted under the Criminal Conspiracy Act (CCA) to ensure peaceful elections.
Pramod Kumar Mandal, DIG of Purnea division, said extra paramilitary forces were requested from the Centre due to the complex geography of Seemanchal. Deployment is now complete, with the forces working alongside local police to maintain security.
After the Model Code of Conduct came into effect, joint teams of police and paramilitary forces started flag marches and area patrols. Patrolling has been increased on roads and near sensitive polling booths. The administration has warned that any attempt to disturb peace will face strict action.
Security has been strengthened along the Indo-Nepal border from Kishanganj to Araria. In this 100 km border area, search operations and patrolling are ongoing. Joint teams of SSB and Bihar Police are monitoring the area. The border is open for locals, but every movement is under electronic surveillance. Police teams are monitoring villages and border posts around the clock.
The Police Headquarters has prepared a separate security plan for Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj, and Katihar. High-risk polling booths have been identified, and police and administrative teams are active in the field. With elections approaching, the administration aims to ensure that voting day is peaceful and fair.
