Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday accused the Congress party of contributing to Assam’s changing demography, claiming that the infiltrator population in the state rose to 64 lakh during Congress rule. Addressing a public rally at Khanikar Parade Ground, Shah criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, questioning what his party had delivered to Assam “apart from guns, bullets, conflict, and the deaths of young people.”
Shah alleged that in seven districts of Assam, infiltrators had become the majority under Congress administration. He asserted that the current Modi government is taking steps to reverse this demographic trend and strengthen security measures in the state.
The Home Minister also criticized Rahul Gandhi over cultural protocol, claiming that the Congress leader refused to wear the traditional North East scarf during the Republic Day ‘at home’ reception hosted by President Droupadi Murmu. Shah stated, “Rahul Gandhi may do whatever he wants, but as long as the BJP is in power, we will not tolerate any insult to the culture of the Northeast.”
Highlighting Assam’s infrastructure development, Shah praised the completion of the Bogibeel Bridge over the Brahmaputra River, connecting Dibrugarh and Dhemaji. He credited the local Mising community for their role in the bridge’s construction, describing it as a symbol of India’s progress. Shah contrasted the current government’s efficiency with the decade-long delay during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister and Rajya Sabha MP from Assam, claiming the bridge was completed in just four years under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership.
Shah also promoted Assam’s tea industry, stating that the recently concluded Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union would allow Assam tea to be exported to Europe without tariffs. He alleged that the Congress had attempted to defame Assam and its tea sector through a “toolkit” campaign.
The Home Minister further addressed Assam’s flood management, reiterating BJP’s promise to make the state flood-free and urging voters to support the party for a third consecutive term to ensure “development, peace, security, industrial and agricultural progress, and to make Assam free from infiltration and floods.”
Shah emphasized the role of local communities in preventing infiltration, asserting that armed action is unnecessary if citizens remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement.
