Kangana Ranaut Rejects Littering Allegation, Calls Viral Video “Misleading Propaganda”

Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut on Sunday dismissed allegations of littering during her recent visit to Varanasi, calling the claims “false” and “deliberately misleading.” The controversy erupted after a video circulated online showing the actress eating street food and allegedly tossing a chaat plate on the roadside.

Ranaut responded a day later by sharing a photograph on her Instagram story, asserting that the plate had been placed in a dustbin. “India Times, your report is false and deliberately misleading. Selected clips and distorted captions are not journalism, but propaganda. Verify the facts before publishing lies,” she wrote.

The video, widely shared on social media, drew criticism from users who accused the actor-politician of disregarding cleanliness norms in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency. The backlash prompted demands for clarification from several social media handles and local civic volunteers.

Ranaut’s clarification seeks to counter the narrative that she violated public sanitation rules during the visit, where she had been seen interacting with locals and sampling street food. Her post also reignited discussions around media accountability and the use of selective video clips to fuel online outrage.

Kangana Ranaut, who entered electoral politics in 2024, currently represents the Mandi Lok Sabha constituency as a BJP MP. She won the seat by defeating Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh with a margin of 74,755 votes.

On the film front, Ranaut’s most recent release, Emergency, saw her portray former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She also directed and produced the film, marking one of her most ambitious projects to date.

With the video controversy now addressed, Ranaut has urged media organisations to follow due diligence before publishing content, emphasising that misinformation damages both public trust and individual reputation.
