Kirorilal Meena Signals Possible Retirement in Two Years; Seeks Full Probe Into JJM Scam

Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Kirorilal Meena on Tuesday indicated that he may retire from active politics within the next one to two years, adding that the BJP is increasingly focusing on promoting younger leaders. Meena made the remarks during a media interaction after holding a workers’ hearing at the party’s state headquarters.

Addressing questions on the ongoing Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) scam investigation, Meena said he believes the state government should grant permission to probe all officials flagged by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB). The agency has sought Section 17A approval to investigate 20 officers allegedly linked to irregularities in the scheme.

“I do not know what the government will decide. ACB has asked for permission against 20 officers; some names are still pending. It should not happen that one person is trapped while another escapes. Permission should be given for everyone,” he said.

The comment comes a day after Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma approved an inquiry against six officers, including former Additional Chief Secretary of the Jalday Department, Subodh Agarwal.

Meena also clarified his recent remarks made at a community event in Dausa, where he suggested he would soon retire. He said his statement was misinterpreted. “We are promoting the young generation. Read the entire statement. If only selected lines are highlighted, it creates confusion,” he told reporters. He emphasised that his intention was to underline the party’s push for younger leadership, noting Deputy Chief Minister Premchand Bairwa’s rise despite being a two-time MLA compared to his own six-term tenure.

Earlier in Dausa, addressing development-related demands, Meena had remarked, “I am not even the Deputy Chief Minister yet. Premchand Bairwa became MLA for the second time and became Deputy CM; I am MLA for the sixth time.”

On Tuesday, Meena conducted back-to-back hearings at the BJP office, meeting party workers in the hall before shifting to the garden area to address grievances from the general public. He said he had taken prior permission from the party’s state general secretary to organise the public interaction.
