Maithili Thakur is reportedly set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and may contest the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections from the Alinagar seat in Darbhanga.
Sources say she has already met Bihar BJP in-charge Vinod Tawde and Union Minister Nityanand Rai to discuss her political plans.
Maithili Thakur is an Indian singer from Bihar, born in 2000. She gained recognition through TV music reality shows like Indian Idol Junior and Rising Star. Maithili performs in multiple languages, including Hindi, Maithili, and Bhojpuri, focusing on classical, folk, and devotional music. She has a significant digital presence, sharing her music on platforms like YouTube. Maithili has received awards such as the Cultural Ambassador of the Year presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Maithili Thakur, in an interview with Bhaskar, shared that her schooling began late due to financial difficulties. Her father earned only around ₹6,000–7,000 per month from teaching music classes, which had to cover rent, groceries, and other household needs. At that time, the family lived in a small room in Najafgarh, Delhi.
Her father also had another reason for delaying her schooling. Despite having a master’s degree, he faced difficulty finding work when he moved to Delhi. Music became his livelihood, and he wanted his children to focus on music without distractions.
Maithili initially learned at home. Children her father taught often helped her study, lending books from previous classes. By the age of 7–8, her father enrolled her in a municipal school. Although she was younger than her classmates, she performed well in maths and was admitted to the fifth grade. However, she soon stopped attending school to focus on music.
Her mother guided her through practice, ensuring she completed all tasks assigned by her father and did not neglect her training.
Maithili and her brothers were awarded the Atal Mithila Samman by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for promoting traditional folk music. During the COVID-19 lockdown, she started daily vlogging to share her personal life, as well as Bihar’s traditions and cuisine, building a stronger connection with her audience.
