Mamata Banerjee Accuses EC of Appointing Observers Without State's Consent, Alleges Massive Voter Deletions

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of appointing central observers for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls without consulting the state government, claiming many are "BJP sympathisers" unfamiliar with local languages.

Addressing thousands of Trinamool Congress booth-level agents at Netaji Indoor Stadium, Banerjee described the SIR as "illegal, unconstitutional and undemocratic," alleging it has led to the deletion of lakhs of genuine voters' names ahead of the 2026 assembly polls.

She claimed around 58 lakh names were dropped in the draft rolls published last week, with gross errors in mapping and discrepancies in EPIC numbers used to harass voters, particularly the poor and migrants.

Banerjee also alleged a conspiracy involving "armed outsiders" from Bihar entering districts like Bardhaman on motorcycles to "loot ballots," backed by central agencies. She called Union Home Minister Amit Shah the "most useless" she had seen, accusing him of controlling the ECI.

The chief minister directed party workers to verify lists of deceased, shifted or missing voters door-to-door, assist excluded electors with Form 6 filings, and ensure unmapped voters receive notices and documents for hearings.

"No picnics now—only after winning in 2026," she told cadres, urging unity against alleged BJP-EC collusion.

The SIR, aimed at purifying rolls by removing dead, shifted or duplicate entries, has sparked fierce debate. The ECI says over 58 lakh names were flagged for deletion, including 24 lakh deceased, with claims and objections open until early 2026.

The BJP has countered that the exercise exposes bogus voters propping up TMC's rule, while Banerjee insists it targets legitimate Bengali electors.
