Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan is scheduled to visit Odisha on July 9, where he will participate in a series of official engagements focused on sustainable fisheries development and higher education.
According to the Vice President’s Secretariat, the visit will include the launch of important initiatives aimed at promoting the sustainable utilisation of marine fishery resources in deep-sea regions. The Vice President will also attend the 15th Convocation Ceremony of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) in Bhubaneswar.
One of the key events on the agenda will take place at the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), where Radhakrishnan will attend a programme related to the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in offshore and deep-sea areas.
During the event, he will serve as the chief guest for the issuance of Letters of Authorization (LoA), a significant step intended to support and regulate deep-sea fishing activities. The initiative is expected to strengthen the state's efforts to expand marine fisheries while ensuring long-term sustainability of ocean resources.
The Vice President will also unveil the Odisha Deep Sea Fishing Mission document. The mission is aimed at enhancing the state's deep-sea fishing capabilities and promoting scientific, sustainable and economically viable fishing practices. Officials believe the initiative could contribute to increased livelihood opportunities for fishing communities while helping reduce pressure on near-shore marine resources.
The programme comes at a time when both the Centre and coastal states are focusing on expanding the blue economy and improving the productivity of the fisheries sector through technology-driven and environmentally responsible measures.
Following the fisheries-related event, Radhakrishnan will travel to NISER in Khordha district to attend the institute’s 15th convocation ceremony.
NISER, an autonomous institution under the Department of Atomic Energy, is among India's leading centres for science education and research. The convocation ceremony will mark an important milestone for graduating students from various science disciplines, with the Vice President expected to address the graduating batch and faculty members.
The visit highlights the Centre’s continued emphasis on strengthening both scientific education and sustainable resource management. Odisha, with its long coastline and growing research ecosystem, remains an important state in the government's plans for fisheries development and scientific advancement.
Officials are expected to oversee preparations for the high-profile visit, with events in Bhubaneswar and Khordha drawing participation from government representatives, academics, researchers and stakeholders from the fisheries sector.
