Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Dr. Kirodi Lal Meena has expressed strong disapproval over the conduct of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Kota, after the official reportedly refused to receive a memorandum from Congress MLA Chetan Patel regarding crop losses. The incident occurred when Patel visited the SDM’s office in Etawah and threatened to stage a dharna after being denied access.
Dr. Meena emphasised that in a democracy, public representatives have the right to raise issues concerning farmers, regardless of their political affiliation. “I didn’t have to help because he is a Congress MLA, but when it comes to farmers’ rights, there is no BJP or Congress,” he said. He also assured that the Chief Secretary and Collector had promised compensation for affected farmers.
The Agriculture Minister criticised the SDM’s approach, stating that officials should respect elected representatives. “A public representative is a public representative. Today it is our rule, tomorrow it may be someone else’s. I will speak to the Chief Minister about this,” Meena said.
Chetan Patel, representing Pipalda constituency, had staged the protest on November 4 to draw attention to crop damage and demand government action. Dr. Meena highlighted that such measures were necessary to safeguard farmers’ interests and ensure timely compensation.
Reflecting on his own experience, Meena, 74, recalled climbing the fort in Amagarh at age 69 to hoist the flag despite government resistance, underlining his continued commitment to public causes. He also mentioned his involvement in the ongoing paper leak case, which led to the arrest of 76 police officers and two RPSC officials.
In addition to farmers’ issues, Meena urged supporters to actively participate in upcoming election campaigns, particularly in Anta, stating that a win for his party’s candidate would strengthen his position. He also commented on Kanwarlal Meena, currently in jail, stressing that casteism, regionalism, and nepotism pose serious challenges to governance and justice.
The Minister’s remarks underscore ongoing tensions between administrative officials and political representatives in Rajasthan, highlighting the need for cooperation in addressing public grievances.
