Janata Party National President Navneet Chaturvedi is set to submit a representation to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Prime Minister’s Office seeking an examination of remarks made during a political programme in New Delhi on August 13 involving Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Sandeep Dikshit and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

During the programme, Rahul Gandhi uses a physical demonstration involving Sandeep Dikshit while commenting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s practice of embracing foreign leaders. During the exchange, Dikshit reportedly refers to Meloni, bringing the sitting Prime Minister of a friendly foreign country into a political and humorous discussion about the Indian Prime Minister.

Chaturvedi says he is not alleging any conspiracy or foreign involvement as an established fact. Instead, he asks the competent authorities to determine whether the episode is merely political satire or whether its context, timing and subsequent amplification indicate any deliberate or coordinated effort capable of causing diplomatic embarrassment or friction between India and Italy.

He asks the authorities to examine the complete, unedited recording, verify the exact words and context, establish how the reference to Meloni enters the exchange and assess the subsequent dissemination of the video. He also asks them to determine whether any foreign organisation, individual, intermediary or other external interest is involved, if credible material warrants such an examination.

The representation also asks the government to ascertain through diplomatic channels whether the incident has triggered any adverse reaction or concern in Italy and whether it has any actual or potential impact on India–Italy relations.

Chaturvedi clarifies that his representation is not a demand for political censorship and does not seek action merely over criticism of the Prime Minister or the government. He says that if the episode is found to be ordinary political speech or satire, no further action may be necessary. However, if credible evidence of deliberate coordination, foreign involvement or unlawful conduct emerges, he calls for appropriate action in accordance with law.

He further argues that foreign policy is a matter of national interest and that remarks involving the head of a friendly foreign government can have consequences beyond domestic political discourse, particularly as political content can now reach international audiences almost instantly through television, digital media and social platforms.
