Nitish Kumar to Take Oath as Bihar CM for Record 10th Time on November 20

Patna is gearing up for a major political transition as Nitish Kumar is set to take oath as Chief Minister for the tenth time on November 20, following the NDA’s victory in the Bihar Assembly elections. With the Model Code of Conduct lifted and the list of newly elected MLAs submitted to the Governor, the formation of the new government has entered its final phase.

According to sources, the BJP and JDU have reached an understanding on cabinet representation, agreeing to an almost equal share of ministerial berths. The new council of ministers is likely to include 36 members, the maximum permitted in the state, featuring 16 from JDU and 16 from BJP, including two Deputy Chief Ministers. LJP (Ram Vilas) is expected to get two portfolios, while HAM and RLMO will receive one each. Discussions are also underway on the possibility of one Deputy CM coming from LJP (R.).

Nitish Kumar will submit his resignation today after the outgoing cabinet meets to pass a resolution dissolving the existing assembly. All NDA partners will subsequently elect their legislative party leaders before Kumar is formally chosen as the leader of the alliance. A joint meeting is scheduled for Tuesday to finalise the claim to form the government.

Preparations for the oath-taking ceremony at Gandhi Maidan have intensified, with the venue sealed for the public from November 17 to 20. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Chief Ministers, Union Ministers, and senior NDA leaders are expected to attend. Security agencies have deployed a three-tier protection system supported by central forces, SPG coverage for the PM, and surveillance through ICCC and over 50 CCTV cameras. Around 500 personnel will be posted at the venue, while nearly 5,000 will secure the PM’s route from the airport. Drone activity has been banned, and a full rehearsal of the convoy is planned for November 19 as Patna braces for one of its largest security deployments in recent years.
