Police in Patna have arrested a man accused of concealing his identity, promising marriage and exploiting a young woman he met through a wrong-number phone call, before allegedly blackmailing her by uploading a private video online. The arrest followed a planned operation conducted by the Jakkanpur police on the woman’s complaint.
According to investigators, the incident began in January when the accused contacted the woman by mistake and introduced himself as “Sonu”. The calls continued, and the two began speaking regularly. Over time, the man professed love and proposed marriage, persuading the woman to meet him.
Police said their first meeting took place at a hotel in the Karbighaiya area, where the accused allegedly reiterated his promise to marry her. Trusting him, the woman entered into a relationship. They met several times over the following months.
The woman later told police that the man’s behaviour raised suspicions. Calls were often cut abruptly, and she occasionally heard children’s voices in the background. When questioned, he dismissed her concerns. Discussions about marriage were repeatedly avoided, and his attitude changed when she insisted on formalising the relationship.
After about nine months, the woman discovered that the man’s real name was Mohammad Rustam and that he was already married with three children. She then distanced herself from him. Police allege that during the relationship, the accused had secretly recorded an explicit video of the woman. When she refused further contact, he allegedly threatened her and later posted the video on social media.
Distressed, the woman blocked his number and returned to her family before filing a complaint on December 15. Police then set a trap, asking her to re-establish contact. When the accused arrived at a meeting point near Mithapur bus stand, he was arrested by officers in plain clothes.
ASP Sadar Abhinav Kumar said the accused has been taken into custody and further investigation is underway, including examination of digital evidence and applicable charges under criminal and cyber laws.
