Despite the challenges in the elections, 73-year-old Modi will remain a focal point of Indian politics for years to come. Since entering electoral politics as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, Modi will have to navigate the sharp twists and turns of coalition politics for the first time. He led his party to victory and power in Gujarat in 2002, 2007, and 2012, and again at the center in 2014 and 2019.
However, the Congress and its Indian allies also performed well in the elections, dealing a significant blow in BJP strongholds like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won 293 seats, which Modi described as the biggest success for any pre-poll alliance.
