Telangana Plans to Name Hyderabad Road After Donald Trump; Tech-Themed Road Names and Political Row Follow

The Telangana government has proposed naming a major road in Hyderabad “Donald Trump Avenue,” a move officials say is aimed at enhancing the city’s global visibility ahead of the Telangana Rising Global Summit scheduled for January. The stretch runs adjacent to the US Embassy, making it a symbolic choice linked to strengthening international ties. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has backed the proposal, calling it both an “honour” and an “inspiration” for residents.

If finalized, this would be the first instance of a road outside the United States being named after a sitting US President. Senior officials involved in the proposal said the initiative is intended to position Hyderabad more prominently on the world map at a time when the state is seeking greater foreign investment.

The naming drive extends beyond global political figures. Several key roads in the city are also set to be named after major tech giants that have established a strong presence in Hyderabad. Proposals include “Google Street,” “Microsoft Road,” and “Wipro Junction,” reflecting the companies that have played a central role in shaping the city’s identity as a technology hub.

In a parallel decision, the state government has approved naming a 100-metre-wide Greenfield Radial Road—linking the Raviryal interchange of the Nehru Outer Ring Road to the planned ‘Future City’—after industrialist Ratan Tata. The adjacent Raviryal interchange already bears the name “Tata Interchange,” reinforcing the state’s recognition of Tata Group’s contributions.

The announcement has also triggered a political confrontation. Union Minister and BJP leader Bandi Sanjay Kumar criticised the move, arguing that if the Congress government is intent on renaming places, it should start by renaming Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar. Accusing the Chief Minister of chasing trends, he posted on X that Revanth Reddy “names places after whatever is trending.”

The proposals are expected to be reviewed by relevant civic and administrative bodies in the coming weeks as the state prepares for the global summit.
