TMC MP’s Remark on Kolkata Rape Sparks Outrage
Digital Desk
TMC MP's controversial statement — "What can you do when a friend rapes?" — in connection with the Kolkata rape case has triggered massive public backlash. Amid mounting criticism, the MP is now offering a clarification, claiming the comment was misinterpreted.
After the gangrape of a law student in a law college located in Kasba area of Kolkata, the statement given by Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee has raised the political temperature.
While talking to the media about the gangrape incident, Kalyan Banerjee had said that only a few men commit such crimes. But what can be done if a friend rapes his friend.
Kalyan Banerjee's statement
The TMC MP said, "The police cannot be in a college or school all the time. This incident happened between college students. This law college is a government college, can the police be present there all the time? The college administration is not a part of the government."
A political storm has arisen after his comment. BJP and other parties have launched a scathing attack on Banerjee's statement. However, while clarifying his statement, Kalyan Banerjee said that it has been 'distorted'.
The TMC MP said, "My words have been distorted by some media institutions." He also said that he does not support any kind of crime and is in favor of the arrest of all the accused.
BJP's attack
BJP has targeted Kalyan Banerjee's statement. West Bengal BJP posted on the social media platform X and wrote, "TMC MP is supporting the rape accused! A student in the town was gang-raped by a TMC leader and his gang and Kalyan Banerjee is calling women's safety a political agenda."
