Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar detained, BJP calls police action political vendetta

The politics of West Bengal heated up on Friday when BJP state president and Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar was taken into custody by the police.

He was taken to the lockup of Kolkata's Lalbazar Police Headquarters, where many BJP supporters are also present with him. After this incident, the confrontation between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP in the state has intensified.

What is the matter

On Friday morning, Sukanta Majumdar was going towards Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose's house on a bike to attend the 'West Bengal Day' program organized by the BJP. Then the police tried to stop him on the way and refused to proceed, but he bypassed the police and went ahead alone. After attending the program, when he left for the house of famous doctor Rajat Shubhra Banerjee to meet him, he was once again stopped by the police on Harish Mukherjee Road.

Stopped for security reasons: Police
The Kolkata Police says that Sukanta Majumdar was stopped for security reasons, while the BJP alleges that this is part of political vendetta. Majumdar was first kept in the car for about an hour, then he was forcibly made to sit in a police vehicle and taken into custody. During this time, when Dr. Rajat Shubhra Banerjee also came out of his house, he was also taken into custody by the police.

After being detained, Sukanta Majumdar expressed displeasure and said, "I don't know why we were detained. This does not happen anywhere in the world." He claimed that he has been arrested and kept in the police lockup at Lalbazar in Kolkata along with BJP supporters.

BJP's sharp attack
BJP leaders have strongly condemned the police action and termed it as "dictatorial thinking" of the Bengal government. The party says that opposition leaders are not even being allowed to freely attend the program and meet the people.
