A heated exchange between BJP and Congress leaders marked the Jan Akrosh Rally in Radhanpur, Patan district, as party representatives traded sharp words over governance and representation.
During the rally on Monday, Patan MLA Kirit Patel, speaking at a Congress public meeting, criticized local representation without directly naming BJP’s Radhanpur MLA Lavingji Thakor. “The people of Radhanpur have replaced a speaking MLA with a dancing one. Do you want an MLA who raises issues in the Assembly or one who entertains in processions?” Patel questioned.
Responding to the remarks, Lavingji Thakor defended his public image and devotion. “I have been a devotional person since childhood and it is our duty to preserve Indian culture. I condemn this nonsense. If you point a finger at us, three point back at you,” Thakor said, highlighting his work in spiritual gatherings and public service. He also vowed to publish a book showcasing his contributions and countering allegations.
The confrontation came amid broader internal disputes within Congress during the rally. Kirit Patel and Santalpur taluka Congress leader Bhacha Ahir clashed publicly over endorsements for the 2027 elections. Patel referred to Bhacha Ahir as a “Congress bed-turner,” while Ahir accused Patel of similar improprieties. Veteran leaders including Chandanji Thakor intervened to calm tensions.
Prominent leaders present at the event included Gujarat Pradesh Congress President Amit Chavda, former Union Minister Tushar Chaudhary, Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani, Patan MLA Kirit Patel, former Sidhpur MLA Chandanji Thakor, and former Radhanpur MLA Raghu Desai.
The Jan Akrosh Rally, which began its Patan district leg on Monday, focused on pressing local issues such as farmer debt relief, government recruitment, fixed pay systems, inflation, and prohibition of alcohol. The verbal spats overshadowed the policy discussions but highlighted the ongoing political rivalry and factionalism in the region.
