West Bengal Sports Minister Offers Resignation After Chaos at Messi Event; Police, Officials Face Action

West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas has submitted his resignation to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee following disorder and vandalism during a football event featuring global icon Lionel Messi at Salt Lake Stadium on December 13. Senior police and administrative officials have also been subjected to disciplinary action after a preliminary inquiry found serious lapses in crowd control and event management.

Biswas wrote to the Chief Minister seeking to be relieved of his responsibilities, taking moral responsibility for the incident. Sources said the Chief Minister has not yet accepted the resignation. The event, held at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, witnessed overcrowding, damage to property and disruption, prompting criticism over planning and security arrangements.

In response, the state government ordered a probe and initiated action against officials responsible for law and order and venue management. According to a letter issued by the Chief Secretary’s office, the preliminary inquiry cited failures in coordination with organisers, inadequate deployment of police personnel and insufficient preventive measures despite the high-profile nature of the programme.

Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Mukesh Kumar has been issued a show-cause notice and asked to explain the lapses within 24 hours. Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar has also been served a show-cause notice in connection with the overall supervision and preparedness for the event.

In a major administrative move, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar, Aneesh Sarkar, IPS, has been placed under immediate suspension for negligence of duty. Departmental proceedings have been initiated against him for failing to prevent vandalism and ensure effective crowd control.

Administrative action has extended to the Youth Affairs and Sports Department. Principal Secretary Rajesh Kumar Sinha has been asked to submit an explanation, while Deb Kumar Nandan, CEO of the stadium authority, has been relieved of his responsibilities with immediate effect.

The government has constituted a Special Investigation Team comprising senior IPS officers to conduct a detailed probe and fix accountability. The SIT is expected to submit a comprehensive report on the causes of the breakdown and recommend corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in future.
