Karnataka Urban Development Minister Yathindra Siddaramaiah on Sunday criticised the Union government over the recent increase in domestic LPG prices, alleging that the Narendra Modi-led administration was disconnected from the difficulties faced by common people. Reacting to the hike, the Congress leader said the Centre had shown little concern for families already struggling with inflation and rising living costs. He claimed that the latest increase in cooking gas prices would further strain household budgets and questioned the timing of the decision. His remarks came amid a broader opposition attack on the BJP-led government over the issue.

According to reports, domestic LPG cylinder prices have been raised by ₹29, prompting criticism from several opposition parties. Leaders from the Congress and other parties have accused the Centre of adding to the financial burden on consumers at a time when prices of essential commodities remain elevated.

Yathindra Siddaramaiah said the government should focus on providing relief to citizens rather than increasing expenses. He alleged that rising fuel and cooking gas prices have adversely affected middle-class and lower-income families. The minister maintained that people expected measures to ease inflationary pressures, but instead faced another price increase.

Opposition Steps Up Criticism

The Karnataka minister’s remarks echoed criticism from other opposition leaders, who have questioned the Centre’s economic policies and accused it of failing to shield consumers from price shocks. Congress leaders have repeatedly raised concerns over fuel prices and inflation, making them a key political issue.

The latest controversy comes days after Yathindra Siddaramaiah was inducted into the Karnataka cabinet and entrusted with the Urban Development portfolio. He is the son of former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and is serving his first term as a minister in the state government.

Political Debate Intensifies

The LPG price increase has become another flashpoint between the BJP and the Congress. In the past as well, Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders have criticised fuel price revisions and linked them to the rising cost of living. Similar attacks were made earlier this year following increases in commercial and domestic LPG prices.

While the Centre has not responded directly to Yathindra Siddaramaiah’s latest remarks, the issue is expected to remain part of the political discourse in the coming weeks, with opposition parties likely to continue pressing the government on inflation and household expenses.
