Lord Jagannath's Chariot in Kolkata to Roll on Sukhoi Fighter Jet Tyres, Ending 48-Year Tradition

In a remarkable fusion of tradition and modern engineering, Lord Jagannath's chariot for the 2025 Rath Yatra in Kolkata will feature tyres repurposed from Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jets, replacing the Boeing B-747 jumbo jet wheels used since 1978

In this year's ISKCON Rath Yatra in Kolkata, the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra will travel on the tyres of Sukhoi fighter plane. For the last 48 years, tyres of Boeing aircraft were being used in this Rath Yatra. But now, breaking this decades-old tradition, the tyres of Sukhoi fighter plane were being used in this Rath Yatra. That is, this time the chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra will move at a slow speed riding on the tyres of Sukhoi fighter plane.

For the last 48 years, tyres of Boeing aircraft were being used in this Rath Yatra. Now, breaking this tradition, this change has been brought in the chariot. This has been done because the tyres of Boeing had become very old. Not only this, for the last 15 years, a replacement for Boeing's tyres was being searched. ISKCON spokesperson Radharaman Das said that the diameter of Sukhoi's tyres is similar to Boeing's tyres. Due to this, it was decided that Sukhoi's tyres will be fitted in this chariot. Now, it is very difficult to get Boeing's tyres.

The company was surprised

Radharaman Das said that Sukhoi's tyre manufacturing company was surprised when it was asked for a quotation. The company did not understand why it was being asked for a quotation for the Rath Yatra. After this, the company was informed about the entire situation by ISKCON. A team of the company was called to Kolkata and they were shown the chariot.

A unique confluence of tradition and modernity

ISKCON spokesperson said that this year Lord Jagannath will give darshan to the devotees by riding on a chariot equipped with Sukhoi's tyres. This is not only a big change in terms of technology, but is also a symbol of a unique confluence of tradition and modernity. He told that when the company's team saw that these three chariots have been running on the wheels of Boeing aircraft for the last 48 years, they agreed to provide four tyres of Sukhoi to ISKCON. At present, the work of installing these four tyres is being done.
