Story Of King Mahabali

According to the traditional story, Lord Vishnu appeared before Mahabali in the form of Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin. Vamana asked for as much land as could be covered in three steps.
After Mahabali agreed, Vamana assumed a cosmic form. His first two steps covered the earth and heavens. Mahabali then offered his own head for the final step.
The tradition holds that Mahabali was allowed to return once every year to visit his people. Thiruvonam symbolically marks this annual homecoming.
