Putrada Ekadashi Vrat Katha

According to the traditional vrat katha, King Mahijit of Mahishmati was righteous but remained without children. Concerned about his future and the welfare of his kingdom, his ministers approached sage Lomasha for guidance.

The sage told them that the king's childlessness was connected to an act committed in his previous life. He advised the king's subjects to observe Shravan Shukla Ekadashi and dedicate the spiritual merit of the fast to the king.

The people followed the instructions, observed the Ekadashi fast and offered the merit of their observance to King Mahijit. According to the legend, the queen subsequently gave birth to a son.

The story is traditionally narrated as part of the religious significance of Shravan Putrada Ekadashi.

Puja Vidhi and Fasting

Devotees generally begin preparations on Dashami, the day before Ekadashi. Traditional observances include consuming sattvik food and avoiding grains, rice, pulses and certain other foods during the fast.

On Ekadashi, devotees worship Lord Vishnu with flowers, fruits and other offerings. Panchamrit abhishek may also be performed according to family and regional traditions. Many devotees spend the evening in prayer, bhajan and Vishnu naam smaran.

Some devotees observe a nirjala fast, while others follow a partial fast depending on their health, age and religious practice. Those with health concerns should not undertake prolonged fasting without appropriate medical advice.

Religious Significance

Shravan Putrada Ekadashi is counted among the important Ekadashi observances dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Traditional scriptures and religious narratives describe the fast as spiritually beneficial and associate it with the fulfilment of family-related wishes.

The festival is also connected with devotion, charity, prayer and self-discipline. Devotees believe that observing the vrat with sincerity helps them seek Lord Vishnu's blessings and spiritual well-being.

It is important to note that beliefs concerning the ability of the vrat to fulfil specific wishes, including having a child, are religious traditions and faith-based beliefs, not medical guarantees.
