Vat Savitri Vrat 2025: A Festival of Unwavering Devotion by Married Women

Vat Savitri Vrat is a sacred Hindu festival observed by married women for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Celebrated with deep devotion, the fast is inspired by the legendary tale of Savitri and Satyavan. In 2025, this vrat will be observed on Thursday, May 22, coinciding with the Amavasya (new moon) of Jyeshtha month.

Vat Savitri Vrat is especially observed by married women to wish for their husband's longevity, happiness, prosperity and unbroken good fortune. This fast is considered a symbol of the determination, faith and sacrifice of women power. The story of Vat Savitri Vrat is described in the Vana Parva of Mahabharata.

According to this, a devoted woman named Savitri had brought back the life of her dead husband Satyavan from Yamraj with her penance, intelligence and unwavering devotion. Savitri had performed rigorous penance sitting under the Vat tree, hence the Vat (Banyan) tree is worshipped in this fast.
