Greater Noida to Host National Boxing Championship from Jan 4 as Delhi-NCR Pollution Forces Schedule Change

The rising pollution levels across Delhi-NCR have begun to affect major sporting events, with the National Boxing Championship becoming the latest tournament to face disruption. Originally scheduled from December 31, 2025, to January 6, 2026, the event has now been postponed due to strict pollution-related restrictions implemented by the government.

Officials confirmed that the championship will now be held from January 4 to January 10, 2026, at Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida—the same venue as initially planned. The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced the revised dates after evaluating the mandatory pollution-control measures that remain in effect until December 31.

This year’s edition holds special significance as it marks the first time in history that both the men’s and women’s National Boxing Championships will be held together. Athletes, especially those from Haryana and other northern states, had been preparing intensively for the tournament and now have a short extension before stepping into the ring.

BFI Confirms Date Change but Retains Venue

In an official statement, the Boxing Federation of India said:

“In view of the mandatory pollution control measures implemented by the government and effective till December 31, 2025, the championship will now be held between January 4–10, 2026 at the same venue.”

All logistical arrangements, training facilities, and accommodation plans will continue as originally organised, ensuring that athletes face minimal disruption beyond the date shift.

Top Indian Boxers Set to Compete in 10 Weight Categories

The upcoming championship will see participation from top senior boxers representing units from across the country. Competitors will fight across 10 weight categories each for men and women, making the event highly competitive and aligned with international standards.

According to BFI, the championship will “fully comply with World Boxing Technical and Competition Rules,” ensuring a fair, transparent, and world-class tournament experience.

Defending Champions Gear Up for Title Defence

The prestigious event will witness defending champions returning to the ring with strong expectations:

Services will enter as the reigning men’s national champions.

Railways will defend their title in the women’s category, aiming to maintain their dominance in the sport.

With both experienced and emerging boxers aiming for national glory, the championship promises intense matchups and high-energy bouts.

A Crucial Tournament Ahead of an Important Sporting Year

The National Boxing Championship serves as an important platform for selecting and nurturing athletes who will represent India at international tournaments in 2026. Despite the temporary delay caused by severe pollution levels, the anticipation and excitement among players and fans remain high.

As Greater Noida prepares to host this significant sporting event, all eyes will be on the ring when India’s top boxing talents compete for national honours starting January 4.
