India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has backed teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi as being ready for international cricket but made it clear that the 15-year-old will have to follow the same selection pathway as every other player before making his debut for the national team.
Speaking after India’s disappointing T20I series defeat against Ireland, the former South Africa cricketer said the team management is excited about Suryavanshi’s future but is not looking to fast-track his entry into international cricket solely on the basis of recent performances.
The discussion around the youngster intensified after he was not included in the playing XI during the Ireland series. India suffered a 2-0 series defeat after losing the second T20I by one run on Sunday, allowing Ireland to complete a rare clean sweep over the visitors.
Addressing questions over the decision, ten Doeschate stressed that established players must continue to receive backing from the team management.
“Vaibhav is absolutely ready for international cricket, there is no doubt about that. But players who have contributed significantly to Indian cricket also deserve opportunities and continued trust,” the coach indicated while discussing the team’s selection approach.
The coach also came out in support of Sanju Samson, who has faced scrutiny over his recent performances. According to ten Doeschate, Samson played a major role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year and should not be judged on a short run of results.
India’s support staff believes consistency in selection remains important, especially when balancing experienced players with emerging talent. The management’s approach suggests that while young stars are being monitored closely, opportunities will come through a structured process rather than public pressure.
Ten Doeschate acknowledged that there is considerable excitement within the dressing room regarding Suryavanshi’s potential. However, he reiterated that talent alone does not guarantee an immediate place in the national side.
“We all want to see him play, but the same standards apply to him as they do to everyone else,” he said, underlining the team’s long-term view on player development.
Suryavanshi has emerged as one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country following a remarkable IPL 2026 campaign. The left-handed batter finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer with 776 runs and maintained a strike rate above 230.
His performances earned him the Orange Cap, Most Valuable Player award and Emerging Player of the Season honour, strengthening calls for an early India debut.
Meanwhile, the Indian camp is also reflecting on the Ireland series defeat. Ten Doeschate admitted that the team failed to adapt effectively to match conditions, a factor he believes played a significant role in the result.
The focus now shifts to England, where India will begin a new T20I series from July 1. With several matches scheduled during the tour, speculation continues over whether Suryavanshi could finally receive his first international cap.
If selected, the teenager would create history by becoming India’s youngest international cricketer. He would surpass the record set by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his international debut at the age of 16.
For now, however, the message from the Indian team management remains clear — the opportunity may come soon, but it will arrive through the established selection process.
