Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed fit to lead in Adelaide Test. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood ruled out of Ashes series due to injury, while Usman Khawaja returns to fitness. Australia lead England 2–0 in the series.
Pat Cummins Returns for Adelaide Test; Hazlewood Out of Ashes Series
Australia captain Pat Cummins will return to lead the team in the Adelaide Test, starting December 17. The Australian team has received a big boost ahead of the third Test, as Cummins—who missed the previous match due to a minor niggle—has been declared fully fit.
Confirming the development, head coach Andrew McDonald said Cummins is “ready to go” and will be captaining the side if there are no further issues before the match. “Pat’s body is ready, he’s bowling at full intensity and looks in great rhythm. We are confident he’ll lead the team in Adelaide,” said McDonald.
Josh Hazlewood Ruled Out of Entire Ashes Series
In a major blow to Australia’s pace attack, Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the remaining Ashes Tests due to a combination of hamstring and heel muscle issues. The experienced fast bowler was already under observation after suffering an injury during the Sheffield Shield before the series began.
McDonald shared his disappointment over Hazlewood’s absence, saying, “It’s tough for Josh. We expected him to have a strong role in this series, but his recovery will now take more time. Our focus is on getting him fully fit ahead of the T20 World Cup 2025, which will be held in India and Sri Lanka in February–March.”
Usman Khawaja Fit, Could Return in Middle Order
There’s positive news for the batting lineup as Usman Khawaja has recovered from the back injury that kept him out of the first two Tests. The left-handed batter is likely to be available for selection for the Adelaide Test.
However, the current opening pair of Travis Head and Jake Weatherald has been performing well, which might lead to a reshuffle in the batting order. According to the coach, Khawaja could be considered for a middle-order role if required.
“Khawaja is batting comfortably again and available for selection. We’ll make the final call based on team balance closer to the match,” McDonald said.
Australia Lead Series 2–0
Under stand-in captain Steve Smith, Australia dominated the first two Tests—winning both matches in Perth and Brisbane by eight wickets each. The team now holds a commanding 2–0 lead in the five-match series.
If Australia secures victory in Adelaide, they will take the Ashes series outright with two Tests still remaining. England, on the other hand, face a must-win situation to stay alive in the series and avoid another early series defeat on Australian soil.
With Cummins back at the helm and the team in strong form, Australia appear well-positioned to extend their dominance in the Ashes and set sights on a clean sweep.
