Bengal and Delhi Capitals wicketkeeper-batter Abishek Porel was arrested by Bengal Police on Tuesday in connection with a rape case filed by a medical student, according to an official cited by PTI. The 23-year-old cricketer was taken into custody in Hooghly, questioned by police and subsequently formally arrested. He was later sent for a medical examination and produced before the Chinsurah Court. (The Times of India)

The case relates to a complaint lodged at Mogra Police Station, in which a woman has alleged that Porel established a physical relationship with her on the promise of marriage. The complaint also includes allegations of criminal intimidation and recording intimate moments.

The allegations have not been proved in court. Porel remains an accused, and the matter is currently under investigation.

High Court Had Ordered Arrest

Porel's arrest comes weeks after the Calcutta High Court directed Bengal Police to continue efforts to apprehend him and another accused in the case.

In an order dated July 14, Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya directed police to take steps to arrest the accused. The court also ordered the seizure of electronic devices in connection with allegations involving private material related to the complainant.

Police had earlier informed the court that a pen drive had been seized and sent for forensic examination.

The complainant had approached the High Court alleging police inaction. She also claimed that Porel had threatened to make private photographs public, according to the case details reported by the Times of India and PTI. (The Times of India)

Allegations in Complaint

According to the complaint, the woman first came into contact with Porel in 2023, following which their relationship allegedly progressed and discussions about marriage took place between their families.

She has also alleged that she was assaulted and confined during an incident in Delhi on April 2, 2026. The complaint further alleges that she was denied food and later required medical attention.

These claims form part of the allegations made by the complainant and have not been established through a court verdict.

Porel has previously denied the allegations and indicated that he would respond in detail after the police inquiry. (The Times of India)

The arrest comes at a significant point in Porel's young cricket career.
