Virender Sehwag's trademark batting style appeared on display once again in the Delhi Premier League 2026, this time through his son Aryavir Sehwag. Playing for West Delhi Lions, the young batter produced a backfoot punch that closely resembled one of the former India opener's signature strokes, prompting a wave of reactions from cricket fans.
The moment came during West Delhi Lions' match against New Delhi Tigers at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on August 19. Aryavir scored 22 runs from 14 deliveries, hitting four boundaries before his innings came to an end.
It was not the score alone that caught attention. A video shared by the Delhi Premier League showed Aryavir playing the shot in a manner strikingly similar to his father, leading to comparisons between the two generations of Sehwag batters.
Aryavir's brief contribution came in a high-scoring contest. New Delhi Tigers posted 195/6 in their 20 overs, but West Delhi Lions chased down the target, reaching 201/4 in 19.2 overs to win by six wickets. Nitish Rana's 50 off 23 balls and Ayush Doseja's unbeaten 64 off 33 balls helped complete the chase.
The 18-year-old Aryavir is featuring for West Delhi Lions in the 2026 edition of the Delhi Premier League. He had represented Central Delhi Kings in the previous season before moving to the defending champions for the current campaign.
The comparisons with his father are understandable given Virender Sehwag's reputation for attacking cricket. The former India opener played 374 international matches and scored 17,253 runs across formats, including 38 international centuries. His aggressive approach, particularly against fast bowlers, became one of the defining features of his career.
However, Aryavir has indicated that he does not want to be overly focused on comparisons with his famous father. Speaking about the 'like father, like son' comparisons during the DPL, he said that he does not think about them too much.
That approach could be important as Aryavir continues to establish himself. His domestic record has already produced some notable performances. During the 2024-25 Cooch Behar Trophy, he scored an unbeaten 200 against Meghalaya and later made 297 in the same tournament.
For now, though, it was one familiar-looking stroke in the DPL that put Aryavir back in the spotlight. The resemblance to his father's batting style may have caught fans' attention, but his performances in domestic cricket will ultimately determine the path of his own career.
