BCCI-Standard Facilities in Pune Set to Strengthen Maharashtra’s Cricket Growth

Maharashtra’s cricket ecosystem is set for a major boost with the launch of new high-performance cricket facilities in Pune, equipped to host BCCI-standard matches and provide year-round training for men’s and women’s cricket.  The Punit Balan Cricket Academy, announced by entrepreneur and sports promoter Punit Balan, is positioned as one of India’s largest private cricket development setups, aimed at giving emerging players access to professional-grade infrastructure.

The initiative involves two full-size grounds located at Vadgaon (Sinhgad College) and Lonavala, both being upgraded to enable recognised domestic competitions. Sports administrators believe this will help decentralise cricketing opportunities beyond traditional centres like Mumbai, while easing pressure on existing venues.

A key focus area is women’s cricket, with dedicated batches planned at concessional fees and equal access to competitive fixtures. With participation in women’s cricket rising sharply following the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the move is viewed by analysts as timely and aligned with national development goals.

To ensure uninterrupted training, especially during the monsoon, the academy will include indoor nets, alongside sports science support, conditioning facilities and residential accommodation for outstation athletes. Such features are expected to benefit first-generation players who often struggle with access to professional setups.

“The academy has been established to offer world-class training to emerging and talented players. Through expert coaching and top-tier facilities, we hope to see young cricketers shine on major platforms while also bringing glory to Maharashtra,” Balan said.

As India prepares for a decade of major international cricket events, expansions like this are seen as essential to strengthening the country’s talent pipeline while ensuring the sport remains inclusive and accessible across Maharashtra.
