India added two more medals to its tally on Day 8 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with weightlifter Lovepreet Singh winning silver and discus thrower Seema Kaliramna securing bronze. The two podium finishes took India's overall medal count to 17 after Thursday's events. India now have three gold, 10 silver and four bronze medals and are placed 10th in the overall standings. Lovepreet produced India's first medal of the day in the men's +110kg weightlifting final and came agonisingly close to gold. He lifted 176kg in the snatch, setting a new Indian national record, and followed it with another national record of 212kg in the clean and jerk. His combined total of 388kg was enough for silver, but he missed the Commonwealth title by just one kilogram. New Zealand's David Liti finished ahead of the Indian to claim gold. Lovepreet's result also continued India's strong showing in weightlifting, taking the country's medal count in the sport at these Games to eight.

India's second medal came later in athletics, where Seema Kaliramna won bronze in the women's discus throw at the EDF Scotstoun Stadium. It was not an easy final for the Indian thrower. Seema began with a foul but recovered with a 57.32m effort in the second round. Her third attempt proved decisive as she threw 58.65m, moving into the bronze-medal position. Four of her six attempts eventually ended in fouls, but the third-round mark remained good enough to secure a place on the podium. Jamaica's Samantha Hall won gold with 61.66m, while Canada's Julia Tunks took silver after throwing 60.67m. Fellow Indian Nidhi Rani narrowly missed a medal. She improved to 57.10m with her third attempt but eventually finished fourth. Seema's bronze became India's fourth athletics medal at the Glasgow Games and the country's 17th overall. Athletics and para-athletics have now contributed eight medals — two gold, four silver and two bronze — while weightlifting has delivered one gold, six silver and one bronze. India's remaining medal has come in para-powerlifting.

Several Indians came close to adding to the CWG 2026 medal tally on Thursday. Martina Devi Maibam finished fifth in the women's +86kg weightlifting competition with a combined lift of 245kg. In men's shot put, Tajinderpal Singh Toor also ended in fifth place, while Samardeep Singh Gill finished seventh. There was encouraging news from the decathlon, where Tejaswin Shankar remained firmly in the medal race after an impressive opening day. Shankar finished Day 1 in second position with 4,339 points, just 14 points behind Olympic champion Damian Warner, who leads with 4,353. Five events are still to be contested on the second day. India also enjoyed a clean sweep in men's javelin qualification. Neeraj Chopra led the Indian trio with a throw of 79.61m, while Rohit Yadav recorded 78.37m and Yash Vir Singh threw 78.36m as all three qualified for the final. Praveen Chithravel and Selva Prabhu Thirumaran also progressed to the men's triple jump final. With several athletes still in medal contention, India will now look to improve on its tally of 17 and move further up the standings during the closing stages of the Commonwealth Games.
