India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has expressed confidence that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still have a lot to offer in international cricket and can compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup, provided they remain physically and mentally fit.
Ahead of India’s first ODI against South Africa, which marks the return of both senior players, Morkel lauded their experience, dedication, and ability to perform in high-pressure situations.
“The next World Cup is still a long way off, but these are top-quality players. As long as they are willing to put in the hard work and maintain their fitness, they can certainly play,” Morkel said.
The former South African pacer, who joined India’s support staff last August, emphasized the value of experience. “Experience is irreplaceable. Rohit and Kohli have won trophies and know how to handle big tournaments. So yes, for the World Cup, absolutely,” he added.
Morkel also reflected on the challenge of facing them as a bowler. “I have bowled to them in many games and have had sleepless nights trying to get them out. So I’m fully supportive of them playing in the World Cup.”
India Missing Gill and Iyer in ODI Series
India will be without regular captain Shubman Gill, who sustained a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata, and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer, sidelined with a spleen injury sustained in the Australia series. KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill’s absence.
Morkel provided a positive update on both players’ recoveries: “I spoke to Shubman a couple of days ago; he’s recovering well. Shreyas has also begun his rehab, which is great. We look forward to welcoming them back into the squad soon.”
