In a landmark triumph on Saturday in Biel, the Indian tennis team secured a 3-1 victory over Switzerland in the Davis Cup 2025 World Group-1, marking India’s first win against a European opponent in 32 years.
The last time India defeated a European side was in 1993, when Leander Paes and Ramesh Krishnan led the squad to a 3-2 win over France in Cannes.
Team India’s campaign began with strong singles performances on Friday. Reserve player Dhakshineswar Suresh opened the tie by outlasting Jerome Kym 7-6, 6-3, earning the first crucial point. Later, Sumit Nagal dominated Marc-Andrea Huesler 6-3, 7-6, setting the tone for the historic victory and highlighting Nagal’s rising form ahead of the 2026 qualifiers.
Despite a setback in doubles, where Switzerland’s Jakob Paul and Dominic Stricker edged out N Sriram Balaji and Rithvik Bollipalli 6-7, 6-4, 7-5, India bounced back emphatically. In Sunday’s reverse singles, Nagal delivered another masterclass against Henry Bernat, cruising to a 6-1, 6-3 win to seal the tie.
This result confirms India’s place in the Davis Cup 2026 qualifier, extending a proud legacy in men’s international tennis. India has reached the Davis Cup finals on three occasions (1966, 1974, 1987) but is still chasing its first title. The victory over Switzerland not only ends a three-decade drought against European teams but also injects fresh momentum into India’s Davis Cup campaign.
Organised annually by the International Tennis Federation, the Davis Cup features over 150 nations in the “World Cup of Tennis.” India’s historic win against Switzerland underscores the team’s resurgence on the global stage and sets up an exciting qualifier campaign for 2026. Fans and analysts alike will watch closely as Sumit Nagal and his teammates build on this breakthrough performance.
