India vs Afghanistan ODI series saw Team India register a commanding 170-run victory in Lucknow, with Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan smashing centuries and several records tumbling.
The India vs Afghanistan ODI series produced another dominant performance from the hosts as Team India defeated Afghanistan by 170 runs in the second ODI at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium. With the victory, India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series and underlined their batting depth and bowling strength ahead of upcoming international assignments.
Batting first after winning the toss, India piled up a massive 402 runs in 49.5 overs. Captain Shubman Gill led the charge with a magnificent 154 off 110 balls, while Ishan Kishan added a fluent century. Their partnership laid the foundation for one of India’s highest ODI totals against Afghanistan.
Chasing a daunting target of 403, Afghanistan struggled to build momentum and were eventually bowled out for 232 in 44.3 overs. India’s bowlers maintained pressure throughout the innings, ensuring the visitors never threatened the target.
Centuries Power India
The highlight of India’s innings was the aggressive batting displayed by Gill and Kishan. Both batters completed their centuries in the same over, creating a rare record in ODI cricket.
Gill reached his hundred in just 77 balls, while Kishan completed his century in 71 deliveries. According to match records, this was the first time two Indian batters scored ODI centuries in fewer than 80 balls each in the same innings.
The humid conditions in Lucknow tested players physically. During the innings, Gill was seen batting with an ice pack around his neck as temperatures and humidity levels remained high.
Shreyas Iyer also achieved a personal milestone during the match. He crossed the 3,000-run mark in ODI cricket and became one of the fastest Indian batters to reach the landmark in terms of innings played.
Emotional Moments on Field
Apart from the records, the match also witnessed memorable moments on the field. Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh bowed to debutant Prince Yadav after the youngster completed a spectacular diving catch to dismiss Ibrahim Zadran.
Prince Yadav had mixed fortunes on debut. His first potential ODI wicket was denied due to a front-foot no-ball, but he later bounced back and finished with two wickets.
Another notable incident involved Afghanistan debutant Darwish Rasooli. While batting, Rasooli suffered a hamstring injury and collapsed on the field. Despite medical attention, he could not continue and had to be taken off on a stretcher, bringing an unfortunate end to his debut appearance.
Records Continue to Fall
The match entered the record books for several reasons. India became the first team in ODI history to be bowled out after scoring more than 400 runs in an innings.
The total of 402 also helped India equal South Africa’s record of scoring 400-plus totals eight times in ODI cricket, the joint-highest by any team.
Afghanistan’s 170-run defeat was their second-largest loss in ODI cricket. Their biggest defeat remains the 275-run loss against Australia during the 2015 World Cup.
Officials and analysts noted that India’s all-round dominance with both bat and ball was the defining factor behind the result. The team’s ability to post a huge total and then defend it convincingly reflected strong form across departments.
With one match still to be played, India has already secured the India vs Afghanistan ODI series. The final ODI will now provide an opportunity for both teams to test bench strength and experiment with combinations ahead of future international commitments
