India Dominate Sri Lanka, But Sonal Dinusha Emerges as Hosts’ Big Positive Standfirst

India have remained firmly in control of the Test series against Sri Lanka, but former Sri Lankan cricketer Avishka Gunawardene believes the hosts have discovered some encouraging signs, led by the emergence of young batter Sonal Dinusha.

Speaking to ANI on Wednesday, Gunawardene acknowledged India's superiority while pointing to the performances of Sri Lanka's younger players as a reason for optimism. Dinusha has been the standout batter for the hosts in the two-Test series, scoring 294 runs in four innings at an average of 98.00.

The 25-year-old has registered two centuries and a half-century, with a highest score of 103. His second hundred came in the first innings of the ongoing Colombo Test, although Sri Lanka were still bowled out for 290 and forced to follow on after India posted 503 for nine declared.

Gunawardene said Sri Lanka could take positives from the series despite the results. He particularly highlighted Dinusha's batting and described him as a player who could become a major asset for Sri Lankan cricket.

Dinusha's performances have stood out even as India have maintained control of the series. He made 100 and 84 in the first Test in Galle before scoring 103 in Colombo. He also became only the third batter to make at least 80 in each of his first three Test innings against India, joining West Indies great Everton Weekes and Pakistan's Zaheer Abbas.

Gunawardene also identified another emerging player in Sri Lanka's squad: new off-spinner Keshara Nuwantha. The spinner has taken six wickets in the series and has offered the hosts another young option in the bowling attack.

The former Sri Lankan international, however, was clear about the larger picture. India have dominated the series and won the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs. In the Colombo Test, India again established a substantial advantage after declaring on 503 for nine and then enforcing the follow-on.

For Sri Lanka, the challenge now is to turn individual performances into sustained team performances. Gunawardene suggested that the problem has been less about a lack of fighting spirit and more about how the team handles key situations and executes its plans under pressure.

That distinction could prove important for a Sri Lankan side looking beyond the immediate result. Dinusha's breakthrough and Nuwantha's emergence give the hosts two players to build around, even as India continue to underline the gap between the two teams in the current series.
