Bopanna leaves behind an extraordinary legacy, cemented by his status as one of India's most accomplished doubles players. His career reached a historic pinnacle in 2024 when, at the age of 43, he became the oldest player ever to achieve the World No. 1 ranking in men's doubles. This remarkable feat was accomplished alongside his Australian Open men's doubles victory with partner Matthew Ebden, adding to the mixed doubles title he won at the 2017 French Open.
In an emotional social media post titled “A Goodbye... But Not The End,” Bopanna expressed his profound gratitude. Reflecting on his journey from the coffee estates of Coorg to the world's biggest stadiums, he described tennis as the force that gave him "purpose when I was lost, strength when I was broken."
He extended heartfelt thanks to his family, including his parents, his sister, and his wife Supriya, for their unwavering support. In a touching note to his young daughter, he wrote, "Every match I played in these last years, I played for you, to show you that dreams are worth fighting for."
While stepping away from competition, Bopanna assured his connection to tennis continues. He aims to inspire the next generation, proving that "beginnings don't define their limits." His retirement marks the end of an era for Indian tennis, closing the chapter on a career defined by longevity, resilience, and immense national pride.
