India’s rising shooting star Samrat Rana from Karnal clinched a gold medal in the men’s 10m air pistol event at the World Shooting Championship in Cairo, Egypt. The 21-year-old showcased nerves of steel to edge past strong contenders and finish at the top with 243.7 points on Monday, the third day of the championship.
In a closely fought final, China’s Hu Kai secured the silver medal with 243.7 points, while another Indian shooter, Varun Kumar, took home the bronze, marking a double podium finish for India in the men’s pistol category.
India Shines with 13 Medals, Stands Second in Medal Tally
With Rana’s gold, India’s overall medal count at the championship has now climbed to 13 medals, including 3 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze. The Indian shooting contingent continues to impress on the global stage, currently holding the second spot in the overall medal tally behind China.
Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh Fall Short in Women’s 10m Air Pistol Final
In the women’s 10m air pistol final, seasoned Olympian Manu Bhaker and young talent Esha Singh narrowly missed the podium despite a strong start. Manu, who was leading early in the round, faltered with a low 8.8 score on her 14th shot, slipping from first place to seventh with 139.5 points. Esha, too, succumbed to the pressure after an impressive 10.7 shot earlier, finishing sixth with an 8.4 in her 14th attempt.
The gold medal in the women’s event went to China’s Yao Qianxun (243.0 points), while Hong Kong-China’s Ho Ching Shing (241.2) took silver and China’s Wei Qian (221.4) claimed bronze.
Silver Consolation in Team Event for India
India found some consolation in the women’s 10m air pistol team event, where the trio of Esha Singh (583), Manu Bhaker (580), and world no.1 Suruchi Inder Singh (577) earned a silver medal with a combined score of 1740 points. Both Manu and Esha had reached the individual finals after impressive qualification rounds, with Esha notably achieving a perfect 100 in the third series to finish fourth in qualifications.
