India's campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games enters a crucial phase on Sunday, with Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu set to begin her title defence in the women's 49kg weightlifting event. Day 4 of the Games in Glasgow features a packed schedule for the Indian contingent across weightlifting, artistic gymnastics, lawn bowls, swimming and boxing, with multiple medal opportunities on offer.
Weightlifting is expected to headline India's challenge, with Mirabai carrying the country's biggest gold-medal hopes. The Manipuri lifter will compete in the women's 49kg final later in the day as she bids to win a third successive Commonwealth Games gold medal, having established herself as one of India's most successful weightlifters on the international stage.
India will also have representation in two other weightlifting medal events. Rishikanta Singh will compete in the men's 60kg final in the afternoon, while M Raja will take part in the men's 65kg final later in the evening. The performances of the trio could significantly boost India's medal tally on a day featuring several finals across different disciplines.
Artistic gymnastics offers another opportunity for India to make an impact. Yogeshwar Singh and Tapan Mohanty will participate in the men's all-around final after progressing through the qualification stages. The women's all-around final is also scheduled later in the day, with Indian participation dependent on qualification results.
In lawn bowls, the Indian contingent will continue its campaign after encouraging performances earlier in the tournament. Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh, who remained unbeaten during the opening rounds, face another important sectional match in the women's pairs competition as they look to strengthen their chances of reaching the knockout stage. Meanwhile, Putul Sonowal will represent India in the men's singles sectional play.
India's swimmers will also be in action, with Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Aneesh Gowda and Dhakshan Shashikumar competing in the men's 4x200m freestyle relay heats. A strong performance in the morning session would earn the quartet a place in the final, scheduled later at night.
The boxing ring will witness three Indian challengers. Preeti Pawar begins her campaign in the women's 54kg round of 16 against Malawi's Deborah Mtenje. Later, Jadumani Singh will take on Pakistan's Sumama Rehman in the men's 55kg category, while Aditya Pratap Yadav faces Uganda's Nuhu Batte in the men's 65kg round of 16 after midnight (IST).
The fourth day follows a mixed outing for India on Saturday, when the contingent failed to add to its medal tally despite positive performances in lawn bowls and boxing. Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh maintained their unbeaten run in the women's pairs event, while boxer Sachin Siwach advanced to the pre-quarterfinals, providing momentum heading into another busy day of competition.
A total of 14 gold-medal events are scheduled on Sunday, including nine in swimming and para swimming, three in weightlifting and two in artistic gymnastics. While India will not feature in every medal event, the country's strongest hopes rest on Mirabai Chanu, whose experience and consistency make her one of the favourites to stand on top of the podium once again.
With medal events spread throughout the day, Sunday could prove to be one of India's most productive days at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as several leading athletes begin their campaigns.
