Digital Desk
India’s top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty secured their first final appearance of the 2025 season at the Hong Kong Open Super 500, ending a run of six consecutive semi-final exits.
They followed this with a strong showing in the men’s singles draw as Lakshya Sen booked his spot in the semi-finals.
Satwik–Chirag End Semi-Final Jinx with Clinical Victory
Satwik–Chirag defeated Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Lin Bing-Wei in straight games, 21-17, 21-15, to clinch a place in the summit clash in just 38 minutes. The duo overcame spirited resistance in the opening set, pulling clear after 6-6 and closing out 21-17 with a series of sharp smashes and net kills. In the second, they surged to an early lead and maintained control to seal the victory, finally exorcising the ghosts of past semi-final disappointments.
Earlier in the quarter-final, the Indian pair had battled past Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Yap Roy King in a three-game thriller, recovering from a second-game lapse to win 21-14, 20-22, 21-16.
Satwik–Chirag will now face sixth seeds Liang Wei-Keng and Wang Chang of China in the final. This marks the Indian duo’s first career meeting against the Chinese sixth seeds in a title match at this level.
Lakshya Sen Advances to Singles Semi-Final
In men’s singles, world No. 20 Lakshya Sen earned a hard-fought win over compatriot Ayush Shetty, 21-16, 17-21, 21-13, in a contest that lasted 66 minutes at the Hong Kong Coliseum. Sen led 11-10 at the first interval and dominated the decider with strong defence and precise net play to close out victory.
This is Lakshya’s second semi-final appearance of the year, following his run at the Macau Open in August. He will next face Taiwan’s third seed Chou Tien-chen for a place in the final.
World Championship Bronze Cements Confidence
Building on their bronze-medal finish at the recent World Badminton Championships, Satwik–Chirag’s breakthrough to the Hong Kong Open final underscores their resurgence on the world stage.
