Sourav Ganguly returns as CAB President: Targets Eden Gardens expansion to 1 Lakh capacity

Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has made a triumphant return as Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president after six years, setting ambitious goals to transform Eden Gardens into India's second-largest cricket stadium.

Unopposed Victory Marks Cricket Legend's Administrative Comeback

Ganguly was elected unopposed at CAB's 94th Annual General Meeting on Monday, September 23, 2025, replacing his elder brother Snehasish Ganguly who completed his maximum six-year tenure. This marks the cricket icon's second stint as CAB president, having previously served from 2015-2019 before becoming BCCI president.

Eden Gardens Expansion: From 68,000 to 1 Lakh Seats

One of Ganguly's primary objectives is expanding Eden Gardens' capacity from the current 68,000 to 1 lakh spectators, making it India's second-largest cricket venue after Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium (1.32 lakh capacity). The historic venue originally accommodated over one lakh fans but was reduced to 68,000 before the 2011 World Cup for enhanced spectator comfort.

"Whatever happens it would be after the T20 World Cup next year. The lease has been renewed," Ganguly confirmed, indicating the expansion timeline. The ambitious project aims to restore Eden Gardens' status as a cricket fortress while maintaining modern amenities.

T20 World Cup 2026 and Test Cricket Revival

Ganguly has prioritized securing marquee fixtures for the 2026 T20 World Cup, potentially including a semifinal at Eden Gardens. His immediate focus involves overseeing the return of Test cricket to the venue when India hosts world champions South Africa on November 14 - the first Test match at Eden Gardens since the historic 2019 day-night pink-ball fixture against Bangladesh.

State-of-the-Art Academy and Development Funds

The former captain outlined plans for a new cricket academy in Dumurjala, Howrah, spanning nine acres with floodlights and modern facilities. The project, expected to take 1.5 years for completion, will complement the existing Kalyani Academy.

Additionally, CAB has increased development funds for state units and district associations from Rs.5 crore to Rs.8 crore, demonstrating Ganguly's commitment to grassroots cricket development.

Vision 2036: Olympic Cricket Aspirations

Ganguly's long-term strategy includes extending CAB's Vision 2020 program to Vision 2036, aligning with India's Olympic bid and potential cricket inclusion in the Games. This forward-thinking approach aims to produce cricketers capable of representing India at the highest international level.

The entire CAB panel led by Ganguly, including Bablu Kolay (secretary), Madan Mohan Ghosh (joint-secretary), Sanjay Das (treasurer), and Anu Dutta (vice-president), was elected unopposed, ensuring seamless administrative continuity.

With his proven administrative experience and deep connection to Bengal cricket, Ganguly's return promises an exciting era for Eden Gardens and cricket development in the region.
