In an unusual practice session ahead of the second Test against South Africa, India’s batters Sai Sudharsan and Dhruv Jurel engaged in a risky one-pad drill at Eden Gardens on Monday, aiming to sharpen their footwork against spin. Head coach Gautam Gambhir closely monitored the session, offering guidance alongside batting coach Sitanshu Kotak.
Sudharsan, a left-hander, removed his right pad to encourage a bigger stride and reduce reliance on front-pad reflexes that can lead to LBW dismissals. The drill, executed against both left-arm and off-spin, tested his technique under minimal protection, forcing him to rely on precise bat placement while avoiding injury to exposed areas. Jurel, practicing reverse sweeps as a right-hander, followed a similar approach, removing his right pad to perfect forward stride mechanics essential for executing the shot effectively.
The session lasted three hours, featuring only six players. Ravindra Jadeja logged the longest practice spell, while Sudharsan appeared tentative against pace bowling, with net bowlers, including Akash Deep, creating moments of challenge. Gambhir and Kotak provided personalized feedback throughout, emphasizing balance and shot execution.
Meanwhile, all-rounder Nitish Reddy has been recalled from the India A series in Rajkot to join the senior Test squad in Kolkata. With captain Shubman Gill still recovering from a neck spasm and his participation in the second Test in Guwahati uncertain, Reddy’s inclusion adds depth to India’s batting options. The right-hander, who has a Test century to his name, was initially slated to play the third India A match but was redirected to ensure he participates in full practice sessions with the national squad.
The second Test between India and South Africa will begin in Guwahati on November 22, with team management hoping the combination of practice innovation and squad adjustments will bolster India’s chances after a two-and-a-half-day defeat in the first Test at Eden Gardens.
