Bilaspur Oil Warehouse Fire: Probe Ordered After Blaze
Digital Desk
Bilaspur oil warehouse fire destroys stock worth crores as six fire tenders battle flames for hours. Authorities have ordered a detailed probe.
A major fire at an edible oil warehouse in Bilaspur's Vyapar Vihar spread rapidly due to oil storage tanks, prompting a safety and permission review by civic authorities.
Fire Breaks Out in Commercial Hub
A massive fire broke out at an edible oil warehouse in Bilaspur's Vyapar Vihar area on Saturday morning, triggering a prolonged firefighting operation and raising questions over safety compliance at the facility.
The blaze erupted at around 9 am at the warehouse of Chaudhary Agency, located under the Tarbahar police station limits. Thick plumes of smoke were visible from several parts of the city as flames quickly engulfed the premises.
Officials said the fire spread rapidly because of the large quantity of edible oil stored inside the warehouse.
Oil Tanks Intensified Blaze
According to initial information, the warehouse housed three oil storage tanks along with packaging facilities. The presence of highly combustible oil stock is believed to have accelerated the spread of the fire, making containment efforts difficult.
Firefighters faced significant challenges in accessing parts of the structure. As the flames continued to intensify, authorities used a JCB machine to break a section of the warehouse wall, allowing fire personnel to reach the core area of the blaze.
While the exact cause of the incident remains unclear, preliminary indications suggest a possible short circuit. Officials said the cause would be confirmed only after a detailed investigation.
Six Fire Tenders Deployed
At least six fire brigade vehicles were pressed into service as emergency teams battled the flames for nearly six hours before bringing the situation under control.
District fire and civil defence personnel said additional fire tenders were summoned after the scale of the fire became apparent. Continuous water spraying operations were carried out throughout the day to prevent flare-ups.
Fire officials also pointed to the absence of a dedicated fire station in the Vyapar Vihar commercial zone, saying the issue would be formally raised with the authorities.
Fears of Wider Damage
The incident sparked panic among traders and workers in the busy commercial district. Several neighbouring businesses were evacuated as a precaution after concerns emerged that the fire could spread to adjacent warehouses and commercial establishments.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing towering flames and dense smoke within minutes of the fire being detected. The area witnessed heavy movement of emergency responders and local residents as firefighting operations continued.
Although no casualties or injuries had been reported till the latest updates, officials remained cautious due to the scale of the blaze and the nature of the stored material.
Losses Estimated in Crores
Warehouse owner Namish Kumar Agrawal said a substantial quantity of stock was stored at the facility at the time of the fire. He estimated losses at around ₹2 crore.
The owner maintained that the establishment possessed the necessary documentation and licences for oil storage operations. Merchant association representatives also stated that storage and packaging activities were being conducted after obtaining permissions and that the stock was insured.
The extent of the final damage assessment is expected to become clearer after inspection teams complete their survey.
Civic Body Orders Review
Bilaspur Municipal Corporation Commissioner Prakash Kumar Sarve said authorities would examine whether all required approvals had been obtained for the warehouse and packaging operations.
He stated that alongside the fire investigation, officials would verify compliance with applicable norms related to storage facilities in the area.
The presence of large oil tanks in a commercial locality has also drawn attention, as such installations are generally associated with designated industrial zones.
Traders Seek Fire Station
In the aftermath of the incident, local traders renewed their demand for a dedicated fire station in Vyapar Vihar, one of Bilaspur division's busiest commercial centres.
Business representatives argued that quicker emergency response infrastructure would help reduce risks in an area that houses numerous warehouses and trading establishments.
Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inquiry into the cause of the Bilaspur oil warehouse fire and assess whether any regulatory violations contributed to the incident.
