LAST UPDATED: 21 August 2026 | 8:40 AM IST

Chhattisgarh Weather Tracker 2026: Rain activity remains active across Chhattisgarh on Friday, August 21. The latest warning issued by the IMD Meteorological Centre, Raipur lists heavy rain along with thunderstorms and lightning for August 21-24, followed by heavy-rain warnings through August 27.

The IMD's latest national assessment also says fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Chhattisgarh from August 20 to 26, while isolated heavy rainfall is possible during the same period. Thunderstorm and lightning activity is forecast over the state through August 24.

1. Heavy Rain Alert Today

Chhattisgarh remains under an active monsoon spell today. The latest state warning issued on August 21 places the state under a heavy-rain warning for August 21, along with a warning for thunderstorms, lightning and squall-related activity.

The forecast is not limited to Friday. IMD has also retained heavy-rain warnings for August 22, 23 and 24, while heavy rain remains in the outlook through August 27.

This suggests that residents should prepare for repeated rain spells rather than expect the weather to clear completely after one spell.

Thunderstorms and lightning are among the key risks today. IMD's Raipur centre has specifically included thunderstorm and lightning warnings for August 21-24.

People outdoors should move indoors as soon as thunder is heard. Farmers and workers in open fields should avoid isolated trees, electric poles, water bodies and other exposed locations during lightning activity.

Weather conditions can change quickly, so district-level warnings and nowcasts should be checked before travelling or beginning outdoor work.

3. Raipur Weather Watch

Raipur and nearby areas are likely to remain under a generally unsettled monsoon pattern. Periods of cloud cover and rain can be accompanied by sudden thunderstorms, particularly when rain-bearing systems become more active.

For commuters, intense showers may temporarily reduce visibility and slow traffic. Water accumulation can also occur on roads and in low-lying parts of the city if rainfall becomes intense over a short period.

The exact timing of showers will vary across the capital and surrounding districts.

4. System Behind Rain

The current weather pattern is associated with a well-marked low-pressure area over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas, as described in the IMD's August 20 bulletin. The system was supporting rainfall activity across central India.

IMD forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Chhattisgarh from August 20-26 and isolated heavy rainfall over the state during the same period. The department also forecast isolated thunderstorms and lightning over Chhattisgarh from August 20-24.

The weather system has already produced significant rainfall. In the 24 hours ending at 8:30 AM on August 20, Mungeli recorded 14 cm of rain, making it the highest reported rainfall total for Chhattisgarh in that IMD bulletin.

5. Temperature and Humidity

Frequent cloud cover and rainfall are likely to keep daytime temperatures moderated in many parts of the state. However, high moisture levels can maintain humid conditions during breaks between showers.

Temperatures can vary significantly from district to district depending on rainfall intensity and duration. A prolonged spell of rain can temporarily cool an area, while sunshine between showers can quickly increase humidity.

Residents should therefore be prepared for rapid changes between cloudy, rainy and humid conditions.

6. Waterlogging and Farm Risk

Heavy rain can create temporary waterlogging in low-lying areas and affect road movement. Localised flooding may also occur where drainage capacity is limited or where rain falls heavily over a short period.

The IMD has specifically advised effective drainage in rice, maize, groundnut, minor millet and pulse fields in Chhattisgarh during the heavy-rain period.

For farmers, regular monsoon rain can benefit kharif crops, but prolonged water stagnation can damage roots and standing crops. Excess water should be removed from fields wherever possible, particularly in poorly drained areas.

7. August 22-27 Outlook

The wet spell is expected to continue beyond Friday. IMD's Raipur centre has issued heavy-rain warnings for August 22, 23 and 24, followed by heavy-rain warnings for August 25, 26 and 27. Thunderstorms and lightning are specifically included in the warnings for August 22-24.

The national IMD forecast also supports continued widespread rainfall over Chhattisgarh through August 26.

Residents should remain alert to sudden heavy showers, lightning and localised waterlogging. Travellers should check the latest district-level forecast before starting journeys, particularly in areas that have already received substantial rainfall.

Today's Weather Conclusion: Chhattisgarh remains under an active monsoon pattern on August 21, 2026, with heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning the main concerns. IMD has extended the heavy-rain outlook through August 27, indicating that wet conditions are likely to persist across the state.
