Former Home Minister Nankiram Kanwar Protests on Street Over Land Dispute in Korba

Former Chhattisgarh home minister Nankiram Kanwar staged a public protest on Monday in Korba, alleging that district authorities were attempting to evict villagers despite clear judicial directions in an ongoing land dispute. The demonstration took place in the municipal corporation’s Raatakhar ward and drew local residents and leaseholders who claim they face unlawful displacement.
Kanwar accused officials of ignoring orders issued by the Chhattisgarh High Court, which had instructed the administration to conduct a site inspection and demarcation before taking any action. According to him, eviction notices were issued without completing the mandated survey, raising questions about procedural compliance.
The dispute centers on land recorded as Khasra No. 74/1, where several individuals were reportedly granted leases during a previous government’s tenure. The matter later reached court, prompting the directive for verification and factual reporting. Kanwar alleged that instead of following those instructions, revenue officials prepared documents and initiated steps to clear possession, potentially misleading the court.
Citing a letter dated January 16, 2026, issued by the local tehsildar’s office, the former minister said it referenced removal of encroachments from Khasra No. 55/1, even though the contested parcel under litigation is 74/1 and has not yet been officially demarcated. He argued that this discrepancy indicates administrative haste and possible record manipulation.
Residents holding land leases supported the protest, stating they have occupied the plots for years with valid documents but now fear eviction. Several participants described the issue as a matter of public interest and called for a transparent inquiry into the revenue proceedings.
Kanwar warned that failure to comply with court directives would amount to serious administrative negligence. He demanded action against officials found responsible and said he has written again to the state’s chief secretary and revenue secretary seeking intervention before the upcoming assembly session. He urged the government to ensure strict adherence to judicial orders and prevent harassment of lawful occupants.
The episode underscores rising tension between local authorities and residents in the area. Political observers say the controversy could intensify if the administration proceeds without clarifying land records or addressing allegations. Officials have not yet issued a detailed public response, and further developments are expected once the matter is reviewed at higher administrative levels in Chhattisgarh.
