A major tragedy was averted in Chhattisgarh’s Baloda Bazar district on Tuesday morning after four elephants, including a calf, fell into a deep open well in Hardi village, located within the Barnawapara Wildlife Range. After an eight-hour-long rescue operation, all four elephants were pulled out safely by the Forest Department team.
The incident came to light when farmers heading to their fields early in the morning heard the elephants’ loud trumpeting. Rushing to the spot, they found the animals trapped inside the well and immediately informed the Forest Department. Officials quickly arrived with JCB machines and local equipment, cutting through the edge of the well to create a ramp and help the elephants climb out.
Rescue teams first pulled out the calf and two adult elephants before successfully bringing out the remaining two. Forest Ranger Gopal Verma said the operation was extremely challenging due to the depth and slippery surface of the well.
Villagers express anger
During the rescue, a section of villagers protested, alleging that the department had failed to respond promptly when a local resident was killed recently in an elephant attack. They accused authorities of acting swiftly only to save the animals. However, after officials explained the situation, villagers cooperated with the rescue team.
Elephants may have strayed at night
Broken solar panels were found near the well, suggesting that the herd may have lost its way during the night and accidentally fallen in. Officials said a group of 28 elephants has been roaming in the Barnawapara forest region, and the rescued elephants were part of this herd.
After the operation, all elephants were examined and found to be healthy and uninjured. They were later guided safely back toward the forest area, the department confirmed
