Residents across 16 localities of Raigarh city will face a scheduled power outage of up to four hours on Friday as the electricity department continues work to replace open overhead wires with covered cables ahead of the summer season. The shutdown is part of an ongoing safety and infrastructure upgrade programme aimed at reducing accidents and improving reliability in densely populated urban areas.
According to officials from the power distribution company, the disruption will affect areas supplied by the 11 kV City Kotwali feeder, which operates under the 33/11 kV Girls College substation. Power supply will remain suspended from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm to facilitate the replacement of exposed electrical lines with insulated covered conductors under the Chief Minister Urban Electrification Scheme.
The affected areas include Seva Kunj Road, Handi Chowk, Gayatri Mandir locality, Mahila Samriddhi Bazaar, Anathalaya Colony, Kotwali police station area, Purani Hatri, Bada Pan Masala area, Kirodimal Colony, Durga Tailor zone and Lal Tanki area, along with adjoining localities connected to the feeder.
In addition to these areas, maintenance work will also be carried out on the 33 kV GDC feeder, resulting in power disruption along Kotra Road, including the vicinity of Hotel Trinity, Hotel Accord, Hotel Jindal Regency and Hotel Ansh. The department has cautioned that the duration of the shutdown may be adjusted depending on ground conditions and technical requirements.
Power officials said the replacement of open wires with covered cables is being prioritised to prevent electrical hazards, especially during the summer months when demand rises and the risk of short circuits increases. “Covered conductors significantly reduce the chances of electrocution, fire incidents and faults caused by contact with trees or structures,” an official said.
The work has been underway for the past five days, with planned four-hour shutdowns being implemented daily since January 19. Areas under the Girls College substation and the divisional office substation have already seen portions of the network upgraded as part of the project.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused to residents and commercial establishments, the electricity department has appealed for public cooperation, stating that the temporary disruption is necessary for long-term safety and service improvement. Consumers have been advised to make alternative arrangements during the shutdown period.
The department also reiterated that emergency services would be restored on priority if required and urged residents to avoid contacting or approaching electrical infrastructure during the maintenance work.
