10 Gates of Omkareshwar Dam Opened, 4102 Cumecs Released

For the fifth time, Omkareshwar Dam released 4102 cumecs of water into the Narmada River, raising levels up to 9 meters. Authorities urged people to stay away from the ghat.

In the eastern part of Madhya Pradesh, Amarkantak, Mandla, Dindori, Jabalpur, Narmadapuram, Harda, the effect of continuous torrential rains is now clearly visible on the water level of Narmada river. Mother Narmada is in spate in the pilgrimage city of Omkareshwar and water is being continuously drained from the Omkareshwar dam project.

Whereas earlier 4102 cumecs of water was being released from 10 gates, the number of gates can be increased even more considering the situation. 4102 cumecs of water is being released into Narmada. Due to increased water discharge, the water level of the river is rising rapidly.

From the point of view of safety, Khandwa district administration has banned boat operation with immediate effect. Devotees and tourists have been strictly instructed not to go near the ghats. The administration has also clarified that boating will be allowed only as soon as the rain stops and the water level becomes normal. The Omkareshwar Dam Management has informed the administration about the water drainage. Also, the districts of lower areas Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh (Dhamnod, Barwani, Alirajpur, Maheshwar, Sanawad, Barwah) have been alerted.

Appeal to devotees and boatmen to stay away from the ghats

SDRF, Home Guard and Police Force have been deployed on the banks of Narmada so that no person reaches the river bank carelessly. The administration has given clear instructions that the safety of the people is paramount. Religious events and pilgrimages going on along the Narmada have also been affected. The administration has appealed to the devotees to maintain patience and the boatmen to stay away from the ghats. At present the situation is under control but in view of the continuous rain, there is a possibility that if the water level increases further, more gates may be opened.
