Congress Leader Moves SC Seeking Removal of MP Minister Vijay Shah Over Remarks Against Colonel Sofia

Congress leader Jaya Thakur has approached the Supreme Court, filing a petition seeking the removal of Madhya Pradesh Forest Minister Vijay Shah for allegedly making communal and defamatory remarks against Colonel Sofia Qureshi.

The plea contends that Shah’s comments violate the constitutional oath of office under Article 164(3) and has requested the court to issue a quo warranto to determine his authority to continue as a minister.

Background of the Controversy

The remarks in question were reportedly made on May 11, 2025, during a public function in Raikunda village, Dr. Ambedkar Nagar (Mhow). Shah allegedly referred to Colonel Qureshi as “the sister of terrorists who killed 26 innocent Indians in Pahalgam,” and further claimed that Prime Minister Modi had sent “the terrorist’s sister” to mediate in the matter.

The petition asserts that these statements were communally charged, defamatory in nature, and detrimental to national integrity, as they sought to link a serving Muslim Army officer to terrorism without any basis.

Sequence of Events

  • May 11: Remarks made during water conservation program.
  • May 13: Shah issued an apology, stating his comments were taken out of context.
  • BJP state leadership summoned Shah and cautioned him regarding the controversy.
  • Later, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to probe the matter.

Petition’s Argument

Thakur’s petition maintains that such conduct is unbecoming of a public office holder, violates the principles of constitutional morality, and warrants Shah’s removal. The plea cites video recordings and media reports as evidence to substantiate its claims.
