A 21-year-old youth from Uttar Pradesh slipped and fell into the deep waters of Itma Waterfall while clicking a selfie on Monday, triggering a major rescue operation by the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF).
Sonu Khan, a resident of Bargarh in Uttar Pradesh, had come to the popular tourist spot with family and friends. According to eyewitnesses, he was standing near the edge trying to take a selfie when he lost balance and plunged into the water. The incident happened so quickly that by the time others realised, he had disappeared into the deep pool.
Locals and family members immediately raised an alarm. Police were informed and a team led by ASI Mahendra Bagri from the local outpost reached the spot. Initial search efforts with the help of villagers did not yield any result. The SDERF team was then called in.
SDERF Sub-Inspector Vikas Pandey along with his team reached the waterfall around 6 am and launched an intensive search operation. Divers are facing difficulties due to the extreme depth and strong water current at the site.
Vikas Pandey said the narrow and difficult terrain makes it impossible to bring boats, so team members are conducting a combing search by entering the water themselves. The operation is continuing as police and administration officials remain present at the spot.
Itma Waterfall, known for its scenic beauty, attracts a large number of tourists, especially during the monsoon season. However, the deep gorge and strong currents have made it a risky spot, with several such incidents reported in the past.
The family of the missing youth is in a state of shock and is waiting anxiously for any positive update. Further details on the rescue operation are awaited as the search continues.
