Wakankar National Award 2026: Yashdhar Mathpal to Be Honored; National Seminar in Bhopal from January 9

          Yashdhar Mathpal has been nominated for the 19th Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar National Award by the Directorate of Archaeology, Archives & Museums, MP. A National Seminar on recent advances in archaeology, archives, and museology will be held from January 9–11, 2026, at Minto Hall, Bhopal
The Directorate of Archaeology, Archives & Museums, Madhya Pradesh, has announced Yashdhar Mathpal as the nominee for the 19th Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar National Award, honoring his significant contributions to the field of archaeology.
The award, which celebrates innovative and impactful achievements in archaeological research, consists of a citation, a plaque, and a cash prize of ₹2 lakh.
Dr. Vishnu Shridhar Wakankar (1919–1988), fondly known as "Haribhau" and often regarded as the "Pitamaha" of Indian rock art studies, was a pioneering archaeologist, art historian, and recipient of the Padma Shri in 1975.
His dedication to uncovering and preserving India’s ancient heritage laid the foundation for modern archaeological research and conservation efforts in the country.
To celebrate Dr. Wakankar’s enduring legacy, the Directorate will host a three-day National Seminar titled “Recent Advances in the Fields of Archaeology, Archives and Museology” from January 9 to 11, 2026, at Minto Hall, Bhopal.
The event will bring together administrators, policymakers, leading scientists, academicians, researchers, and students from across India to share insights and discuss new strategies for managing and conserving the nation's archaeological and cultural treasures.
Seminar Themes Include:

Breakthroughs in archaeology, ethnoarchaeology, archaeometry, artifact analysis, and cultural resource management.

Advancements in archives and records management, including hybrid digital systems.

New trends in conserving tangible and intangible heritage and digital curation of collections.
